Centinela Hospital Donates Medical Supplies to Assist Young Typhoon Victims in the Philippines

Inglewood, CA – January 5, 2010 – Centinela Hospital Medical Center, one of thirteen hospitals owned and operated by Prime Healthcare Services (PHS), recently donated over $7,000 worth of medical supplies to the Arnel Pineda Foundation to assist children suffering from the results of the recent flooding in Quezon City, Philippines.

On September 26, 2009, Typhoon Ondoy brought a month's worth of rainfall to Quezon City and nearby areas in just a few hours, causing severe flooding which resulted in the loss of many lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. Eight days later, Typhoon Pepeng struck, causing more damage. As a result, the Arnel Pineda Foundation is sponsoring a medical mission to help the children who suffered from this natural disaster. The foundation was formed by Arnel Pineda, lead singer of the legendary rock group “Journey” as a way to give back to the country of his birth.

Gigi Douglass, Director of Laboratories for PHS, and her husband John heard about the upcoming mission and asked if the hospital system could assist in this project. Word quickly spread through the thirteen hospital’s owned by PHS with Centinela Hospital contributing three Accucheck blood glucose meters and supplies to run 5,000 tests to check for diabetes.

Says Gigi, “It’s fantastic the way that the hospital has responded to the needs of the children of Quezon City. My husband, John, is flying to the Philippines to personally deliver the supplies and volunteer his services. The Arnel Pineda Foundation is committed to helping the children of the Philippines, so we know that they will be put to good use.”

Prime Healthcare Services and its hospitals believe in giving back to the communities that they serve. Through the Prime Foundation, the organization has donated millions of dollars to support numerous charities and scholarships throughout California. This donation of medical supplies to the Arnel Pineda Foundation expands the organization’s philosophy of, "lend a helping hand" to those in need around the world.
