The Arthritis Institute: Mission Statement
Life is a moving experience.
Life at its fullest is a richly rewarding and invigorating
experience. It is dynamic, full of activity. The pain of arthritis can
cripple life's greatest ambition as easily as its simplest motion.
Restoring motion and relieving the pain of arthritis and
injuries to the hip, knee or spine is the mission of the Arthritis
Institute. And it is the vision of the Institute to assist an ever-larger
population through regional centers of orthopedic excellence that embraces
its team approach to patient care.
Indeed, a founding principal of the Institute is that the
diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and continuing care is best
accomplished by highly focused, richly experienced specialists working as
a cohesive team. The Institute team includes all disciplines of orthopedic
care-diagnostic technicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and skilled
nursing and rehabilitation therapists.

*Local hospital administrators, physicians and community leaders
established Centinela Hospital Regional Medical Center in 2004 to provide
the community with locally owned and operated health care services.
The HealthSystem owns and operates Centinela Hospital Regional Medical
Center; Centinela campus, Daniel Hospital campus and Marina campus, along
with the LAX Medical Center. The Centinela campus offers a broad
range of medical programs in addition to orthopaedic services, and is
also the official hospital of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Lakers, Sparks,
Clippers and Galaxy.
**Operation Walk is a private, non-profit volunteer medical service
organization that establishes successful medical missions for the
treatment of arthritis. Lawrence D. Dorr, M.D., medical director of the
Arthritis Institute at the Centinela Campus organizes the mission to needy
countries lacking medical expertise and practice in the procedures of
total hip and knee replacememnts. Each year, he invites a contingent of
physicians and healthcare professionals to donate their work to local
patients needing these services. Dr. Dorr also uses this opportunity to
educate local doctors on the new techniques as well as stressing the
importance of pre-operative planning, after care and rehabilitation.
The genesis of Operation Walk occurred during a trip to Moscow, Russia,
in June of 1994. At that time, Dr. Dorr led a group of surgeons and
anesthesiologists to Russia to teach techniques of total hip and knee
replacements. Even in Russia, which has surgeons with experience in these
types of surgeries, the education was well received. During this visit,
Dr. Dorr met another group, Operation Smile (which repairs cleft palates).
He realized that a similar operation for the benerfit of arthritis
patients would be a benefit for many countries.
